World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims
The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims is a global event to honor those who have lost their lives or been impacted by roadway crashes.
Central Indiana Cycling will be holding the Indianapolis World Day of Remembrance Vigil Walk on Sunday, November 16 at 1 pm to remember those in our community who have been severely injured or lost their lives due to traffic violence
We invite Indy neighbors to walk with us from Shelby St. to State St. along Raymond. This stretch of Raymond and these two intersections have seen too many crashes with severe injuries and fatalities in recent years. We'll be stopping along the way to pay our respects to those lives lost and permanently altered by road violence - including the 4-year-old killed by a hit and run driver that ran a stoplight at State St.
Ahead of and during the walk, Central Indiana Cycling will give out free bike lights, helmets, and backpack reflective tags. This intersection is a busy one for people walking, biking, and getting to the bus stops. In addition to grieving those lost, we are taking this small action to increase visibility for neighbors crossing the street.
This event takes place amid a genuine crisis: U.S. traffic crashes claimed 40,990 lives in 2023. America has the highest rate of traffic deaths among 29 high-income countries analyzed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Locally, data tracked by Safe Streets Indy shows more bicyclists have been killed on the streets of Indianapolis in 2025 than ever before. As of the end of October, nine bicyclists have been struck and killed by drivers across the city this year. The previous record for bicyclist deaths was set in 2021, with 7 fatalities occurring that year per data compiled by the IMPO.
We have all be impacted in some way by dangerous roads, speeding and distracted drivers, and road crashes. This memorial walk will offer a time to collectively grieve, while highlighting what we need to do to prioritize safety and reduce fatal crashes in our city. We hope you will join us on Sunday, Nov. 16 to honor those who have been severely injured or killed due to traffic violence.
