Weekend and Holiday Rides
Hi I’m Dave Crandall and I am the Weekend/Holiday Ride Coordinator. This is a volunteer role, and I want to share some information since CIBA and Bike Indianapolis just merged.
I rode my first CIBA Weekend ride in 2000. The ride was from Greenfield through eastern Hancock county and had at least 50 riders. The scenery was amazing and the food was even better. What I remember most was the watermelon. After riding this first ride, I started riding every weekend ride on the schedule. In addition to the food at rest stops, what I liked the most about these rides was the variety. Every ride was in a different location which introduced me to new places.
In particular, I remember rides like JAWS, The Wall, Mystic Menagerie, Put Some Fun Between Your Legs, and The Bear. I have wonderful memories of riding in places like Brown County, Wilbur, Morgan Monroe Forest, and Trafalgar. Over the years, I’ve gotten to know almost every backroad in Central Indiana.
I encourage everyone to participate in our weekend rides. Come try it and if you’re like me you’ll keep coming back.
The routes are marked with Dan Henry’s (road marking for turns), GPS maps are available, beverages and food are provided, and you get a new riding experience every time. Some rides include sag support that will pick you up if for some reason you are unable to complete the route.
If you get hooked, I encourage you to become a Ride Leader. While it takes some commitment to create and mark a route and provide support, it is also rewarding. I know riders really appreciate our volunteer Ride Leaders who provide this experience for them. I also enjoy the challenge of creating a route that has good roads, lots of scenery, and maybe a few hills. We also offer other Weekend Rides that are not fully supported, which we call Grand Touring and Grand Sport rides. If you’re interested in becoming, or learning how, to be a Ride Leader, reach out to me, Dave Crandall (dave.m.crandall@gmail.com, 765-623-9984). I’d be excited to talk with you about it, and invite you along for a Weekend / Holiday Ride if you want to learn by experience. You can also reach out to me if you have questions about the Weekend / Holiday Rides.
Find both repeating and the weekend / holiday rides here on Ride with GPS. If you become a CIBA-Bike Indianapolis member, you’ll get a complementary Ride with GPS membership that provides a convenient routing tool for those participating on rides. You have to fill out a liability and release form for the ride you’re attending. If it is a repeating weekly ride, you only need to fill out the waiver form once per season.
