Bike and Roll to School Day Success

One of our favorite things to see during 2025 May Bike Month were the Indianapolis and Central Indiana schools getting involved in Walk and Roll to School Day. Across the United States on May 7th, schools and community organizations sign up to participate in a bike to school day. Some of those schools organize multiple bike to school days per year, and a few even do this weekly! This year seventeen schools in Indiana registered their events. We are featuring two of those - Anna Brochhausen School #88 and Robey Elementary.

At Robey Elementary they had almost 50 students participate in their first Bike to School Day on May 7th. Sam Schilling worked with PTO President Erin McNulty, to organize the event. Clermont Cyclery did free bike safety checks. Wayne Township Fire gave out free bike helmets and followed the group on their route. The Clermont Lions Club generously provided refreshments.

It was a wonderful experience and Sam Shilling, who has kids at Robey Elementary, can’t wait to organize another Bike to School Day in the Fall. Sam is also planning a Walk and Bike Safety Audit for the area around the school to help identify needed traffic calming, bike route opportunities, and safety improvements. If you have questions about the Robey Elementary event, you can reach out to Sam Schilling.

Indianapolis Public School #88 on Indianapolis’ Eastside had about two dozen students participating in their Bike and Roll to School Day on May 7th, 2025. Leslie Schulte, a Community Heights Neighborhood Organization (CHNO) Member, highlighted the connection between daily active transportation, exercise, and student attention improvements while at school. IMPD officers were on site, riding along with students on bicycles. Ashlyn Devine, with Health By Design, helped organize additional volunteers for the event. CHNO has also received funding from Health by Design for their Safe Routes to School program. Stay tuned for community events on the Eastside related to this effort.

Parents can reach out to their Parent Teacher Organization and school leaders and ask them to participate in a Fall 2025 Bike and Roll to School Day - or register for the annual event in May 2026. Locally, Ashlyn Devine, with Health by Design, would love to answer your questions about organizing your own school’s event or improving safety near your school.
